Here’s some insight on the May 5, 2013 changes made by the Texas Comptroller’s office:
The excerpt below is taken from the State’s website: http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/coasintr.html
To begin, let’s define the documents we are talking about: Certificates of account status are often confused with certificates of status issued by the Secretary of State. A “certificate of status” is a certificate issued by the Secretary of State that serves as official evidence of an entity’s existence or authority to transact business in Texas. A certificate of status provides a statement of an entity’s status, as well as the entity’s current legal name and date of formation or registration.
These “Certificates of Account Status,” sometimes called “Certificates of Good Standing,” will no longer be available from the Comptroller’s office. The Comptroller historically issued Certificates of Account Status in response to inquiries about the status of an entity’s franchise tax account. As of May 5, 2013, the Comptroller will respond to such inquiries by providing the status of an entity’s right to transact business in Texas from our online search. Search results reflect the information in the Comptroller’s records at the time the query is made.
